Researchers have coined another term for human being’s deliberate inaction over the climate crisis.
New research suggests that the root cause of the catastrophic climate crisis is the “human behavioral crisis.”
Scientists believe that most of the solutions aiming to tackle the climate problem end up being “just a sticking plaster”.
What is Human Behavioral Crisis?
Joseph Merz, lead author of the research paper explains the phenomenon as something that lies at the core of the problem.
Human behavioral crisis is the deliberate manipulation of human behavior to suit the interests of commercial entities.
The research paper defines it as “the term ‘behavioral crisis’ specifically to mean the consequences of the innate suite of human behaviors that were once adaptive in early hominid evolution but have now been exploited to serve the global industrial economy”.
Exploitation of Human Instincts
The paper explores the manipulation of human behaviors for economic growth by giant corporations.
The authors suggest that marketing strategists have repurposed ancient instincts, such as the desire to belong to a tribe, signal status, or attract a mate, to drive actions that are at odds with the goal of sustainability.
