The Australian government has agreed to pay $17 to victims who were jailed as children.

The victims, who were as young as 12 when jailed, will be paid by the government as compensation. The victims included 120 Indonesians, who settled a major class action against the Aussie government.

Children Detained By Aussie Government

According to the BBC report, the Indonesian children were arrested from Christmas Island or in Darwin, back in 2009 and 2012.

Most of those who were detained were lured to the boats as kids to work on the people-smuggling boats.

The children had no idea where the boats were headed but worked without complaints.

Detentions Violated Australian Law

According to the Australian law at the time, if children were found on the smuggling boats, they must have been returned to their native countries.

But the Australian authorities used old X-ray techniques to determine the age of children.

The Australian Human Rights Commission also found that Australian authorities knowingly detained children in their operations.
