Meta and Google’s YouTube have faced criminal complaints in Ireland for spying on their users.
Both tech giants have come under fire for unlawful surveillance of their European user base without explicit consent.
The man who filed the complaint said the companies have been spying on him for five years.
Meta And YouTube Criminal Complaint
Privacy consultant Alexander Hanff told The Register that Meta’s data collection without prior consent breaches Ireland’s computer abuse law.
Mr. Hanff said he notified Pearse Street Garda and will send further information to them.
Two weeks ago, the privacy consultant filed a complaint against YouTube’s ad system, where videos don’t run unless ads are allowed.
Meta Monitoring Behavior
Mr Hanff said the tech giant has no legal basis for collecting data as it doesn’t abide by local laws.
“(Meta) illegally deployed surveillance technology to my computers for the purpose of monitoring my behavior, as they had no reasonable excuse or lawful authority to do so,” he said.
