The number of people without adequate housing has skyrocketed since last year in the US due to a surge in rents.

A report published by Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies suggests that roughly 653,000 people were homeless in the United States in 2023, around a 12% increase from the same time in 2022.

Record Homeless in US

According to the report, the US witnessed a record surge in homelessness in the nation.

Homelessness increased by 48% compared to the same time in 2015 due to skyrocketing inflation and the cost-of-living crisis in the country.

Experts credit the surge to several factors including high rents and the expiration of pandemic relief.

Factors Involved

Experts are attributing the alarming jump to blistering inflation and rental prices in 2021 and 2022.

The report asserted that “renter protections, income supports and housing assistance” mitigated the impact during the pandemic but all those things are gone now.
